Preferably my all-time favourite Disney movie ever. T'was released to theaters on July the 2nd of 1986, and has since then had nearly three releases to video and one on dvd (not counting UK). It is said to be Disney's "most under-appreciated film", and that is a shame as it certainly deserved more praise than it got. The setting is 1897 Victorian London, and Olivia Flaversham (Susanne Pollatschek) is celebrating her birthday with her father, Hiram Flaversham (Alan Young), when out of the blue, Hiram is abducted by a peg-legged bat, known as Fidget (Candy Candido). When a kindly mouse known as Dr. David Q. Dawson (Val Bettin) finds Olivia in her despair, they set off to find famous detective, Basil of Baker Street (Barrie Ingham). Turns out the one behind Olivia's father's disappearence is Basil's long time nemesis, Professor Ratigan (Vincent Price), who has Olivia's father held hostage. He has taken advantage of Hiram's toymaking skills, and needs him to build a lifesize replica of their queen Moustoria, in a large scheme to take her place as ruler, and become the king of mousedom. If I was to rate this movie on a scale of 1 to 5, I myself would surely give it a 5. I give credit to the animators whom have created easy-to-remember and lovable characters, the awesome voice talent, and also to Melissa Manchester for her voice talents in the musical number "Let Me Be Good To You", also written by Melissa Manchester. Other musical numbers give credit to Vincent Price's incredible voicing and singing, and of course, the musical score is by the famous Henry Mancini, marking "The Great Mouse Detective" as the first children's film for him to compose the music. All in all, an excellent movie, and I recommend it to all Disney fans.
